Thinking Outside The Box

Posted on 2009-10-30 13:51:09

I love crayons. I love the bright colors, the smell when you open a new box. The feel of the crayons on the paper. A new box of Crayola Crayons brings back good memories. It allows you to think outside the box. Color choices are yours. There are no rules. You're free to create.

Chiropractic is like that. Thinking outside the box. When a cold starts to come on the first thing many folks think is how quickly can I get to the store to get cold meds.

What we need to think FIRST is how quickly can I get to my chiropractor! Take ear infections in children for example:

Middle Ear Infection ( From Chiroweb)

A good example are children and earaches. Earache is the most common reason for office visits to pediatricians. By the age of three years, more than 70 percent of children will have had at least one episode of earache and about a third will have had more than three episodes. It is not surprising, therefore, that earache is also the most common reason for children under the age of five years presenting to the chiropractor's office. According to 1992 survey data, children with earache attending the chiropractor will usually respond within about three visits. Many of these children with middle ear infections that respond to treatment by the chiropractor have had a long history of middle ear infections coupled with several courses of seemingly ineffective antibiotic treatment.

When a child with earache is diagnosed with middle ear infection by the pediatrician, the usual treatment involves a course of antibiotics.  Why then do some of these children continue to have ear problems? The cause of the child's middle ear infection may not be due to bacteria, and since antibiotics are only effective against bacterial pathogens, then frequently there will be no response. Since numerous cases of middle ear infection can be caused by a virus, and viruses do not respond to antibiotics, this may be the reason why children develop chronic ear infections.

Also, not all bacteria will succumb to antibiotics, so several different formulations may have to be tried.

Next, even though the selected antibiotics may be quite effective in eliminating the invading bacteria, the residual fluid may be retained inside the ear due to impaired drainage from the middle ear cavity. This fluid may become an ideal culturing medium for the next pathogen which arrives on the scene.

Finally, the anatomy of young children is somewhat different in that they have shorter and more horizontal eustachian tubes, making drainage difficult.
What role does the chiropractor play in evaluating and treating these children?

The chiropractor's task is to ascertain if the reason for the body's inability to combat the infection is caused by irritation of the small nerves in the spine (called free nerve endings). When these nerve endings are irritated, an abnormal tension is produced in the small muscles of the neck. This muscle tension can place pressure on the lymphatic drainage ducts resulting in inadequate drainage from inside the ear, thus preventing the body from being able to naturally correct the problem.

Chiropractic management of the patient with earache involves a detailed and thorough evaluation, usually followed by a short course of spinal adjustments and manipulation of the neck muscles to help restore normal lymph drainage. The chiropractor is the doctor most experienced in identifying these spinal problems and in correcting them, usually with a very light finger-tip adjustment. Treatment is usually short and the resolution is frequently swift. Patients who, at the time of examination, are on antibiotics probably don't have a high risk for serious complicating infections. Those patients who are not on antibiotics may need to be watched more closely and alternative treatments considered if no short-term response to spinal adjusting is apparent.

When your child has an ear infection give us a call to schedule an appointment. Dr. Mike will take good care of your child..... and me... I'll be ready with a fresh coloring book and crayons.

Sports & Chiropractic

[april+soccer+1.jpg]

April, following in the footsteps of her mother, is starting soccer. Her mom started soccer at age 4. Lucinda played on competitive leagues, at the middle school level, high school level, college level and now in the adult leagues. Soccer has been in our family for 23 years.

The program April enrolled in is Smart Start Soccer. Its central focus is on developing skills. They learn how to trap, pass, dribble and work as a team. There are no games, no pressure, just a relaxing atmosphere to learn about the game of soccer with their friends. It is a very impressive building block for 4-5 year olds as an introduction to soccer. It is sponsored through our local parks and recreation department.

Chiropractic is a "Smart Start" for youth as well. Children who are starting a sports program are more susceptible to injuries because they have slower reaction times than adults. They are less coordinated and still in the process of growing. Children take many falls, strain muscles and add new stress to their spine. A chiropractor understands the unique needs of children in sports and knows how the game affects the spine. Most professional sport teams have a chiropractor on staff to enhance athlete performance, reduce injuries and help injuries heal quicker. Like professionals, children in sports also need to have their spine checked on a regular basis to make sure their spine, extremities and nerve system are functioning properly to enhance performance. This allows them to function at a higher level, prevent injury and removes any impediments to healing, should an injury take place.

If you would like to schedule an appointment for your young athlete give us a call at the office. 859-271-LIFE (5433) Just ask for the soccer memaw. Now go out and PLAY!

Coconuts & Chiropractic

Posted on 2009-10-27 08:22:20

Destination 365, Serving Jesus Everyday, is our theme for this quarter at the church I attend.
Coconut Island is the make believe place we come each week to learn the weeks lesson. Behind April is the island hut. She and the other children in children's church love the fun that goes on at Coconut Island. Here they can act like monkeys, sing island songs and make wonderful island crafts. They have fun meeting each week with their friends to enjoy the inspiration of their imaginations.

The first week we learned a lot about coconuts. Here are just a few of their uses:

1. The white fleshy part is good to eat, fresh or dried.
2. The cavity is filled with coconut water which is great to drink. The water is sterile until the
shell is cracked open.
3. Coconut milk is made by processing grated coconut with hot water and is 17% fat.
4. Coconut cream is what rises to the top of refrigerated coconut milk.
5. The leftover fiber is used to make cattle feed.
6. The fiber from the husk is used to make ropes, mats, brushes and to caulk boats.
7. Coconut oil is made from the dried meat of the seed.
8. Trunks provide lumber.
9. The leaves are used for baskets and roofing thatch.
10.The husks and shells are used for fuel and to make charcoal.
11.The trunk is hollowed to make drums, containers and small canoes.
12.Coconut water is nearly identical to blood plasma and can be used in emergencies as an IV
fluid.
13.The stiff leaflet makes brooms and brushes.
14.Dried coconut shells, cut in half, are used to buff floors.

We cracked open a coconut to show the children what's inside. They each got a taste and the reactions were varied. Many had never seen a coconut. They were amazed at this wonderful fruit.

Nature provides what we need to live a healthy lifestyle. Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that is very multifaceted and encompasses all ages by taking care of people from the cradle to our seniors. Chiropractic can help regain, restore and maintain optimal health throughout a lifetime. Chiropractic for adults is very important, but chiropractic for kids is vital. Children of today have many more obstacles to face than they had 20 to 25 years ago. A doctor of chiropractic's main focus is to reduce neurological insult caused by what is know by a vertebral subluxation in the child's spine. Locating and correcting subluxations in the spine can have a dramatic effect on the overall state of a child's health and behavioral well-being. ( excerpt from Pathways Magazine)

Just as God provides coconuts to nourish our bodies, he has provided chiropractic as a natural healing source. For more information on children and chiropractic please visit the International Chiropractic Pediatrics Associations website www.icpa4kids.com

Hannah Montana Steals The Show

Posted on 2009-10-26 14:17:31

[Hannah.jpg]

My daughter Lucinda was recently visited by singing sensation Hannah Montana (Granddaughter April). Note the pink boots. Only April and Hannah can pull off that look. Anyway we were thrilled to have such a famous visitor to our humble abode. My goodness what do you say to a star? Oh the joys of Halloween week.

How excited we get about the rich and famous. If only everyone would get that excited about their spine. Stars come and go but we get one spine for life. Chiropractic gives you the tools you need to protect your spine. Chiropractic and a healthy spine....
It's the "Best of Both Worlds"!

Have a great week!

Hand Me Down Dress

Hand Me Down Clothes

This is April in a dress that was hand made for her mother 23 years ago. I saved it because it was so precious. April loves the ducks. She told everyone at church yesterday that this was her moms dress when she was a little girl. You can tell it's dated by the puffy sleeves. I love it. I have a picture of her mom in this dress and I framed them side by side. The smocking in the dress is awesome. You don't see a lot of dresses for girls anymore with that technique. It's becoming a lost tradition. My mother made all of my dresses for me when I was young. Each dress had a matching purse of some sort and a triangle scarf that tied in the back. They were beautiful and I wished they had been saved for my children. I continued the tradition by sewing for my children and grandchildren.

Chiropractic is a technique passed from generation to generation as well. Many families have been with their chiropractor for years. It's great to see families who are experiencing the natural health that chiropractic affords. have a great day!

Lexington KY Chiropractor Dr. Mike Talks About Headaches

Posted on 2009-10-20 12:57:18

Headaches. We all get them from time to time. At times they can be so strong they send us to bed. Medications can address the symptoms but not the cause of these headaches, and simply dull the pain temporarily. Chiropractic addresses the problem.

Chiropractic care centers around manipulation of the spine and neck to improve blood flow and posture. To reduce the headaches, the chiropractor will perform spinal adjustments using his hands, but may also include massage, trigger point therapy, or other types of complementary treatments to address the problem. Dr. Mike will probably also include some home care recommendations such as stretching exercises and posture education to help keep things balanced between visits.

If your headaches are interfering with your quality of life give us a call today. Let us help you Get Back Into Life!
